Overview

Oxytocin is a naturally occurring 9-amino acid cyclic neuropeptide produced in the hypothalamus and released by the posterior pituitary gland. Long known for its roles in labor induction and lactation, oxytocin has gained enormous interest for its effects on social behavior, bonding, trust, empathy, and stress reduction. Intranasal oxytocin is being researched for autism spectrum disorders, social anxiety, PTSD, and relationship enhancement. In the biohacking community, it is used for its anxiolytic, pro-social, and stress-buffering effects. Oxytocin also has roles in wound healing, inflammation modulation, and cardiovascular function.

Mechanism of Action

Oxytocin binds to oxytocin receptors (OXTR), a G-protein coupled receptor, in the brain and peripheral tissues: (1) In the amygdala, it reduces fear and anxiety responses; (2) In the nucleus accumbens, it enhances reward processing during social interactions; (3) Activates GABAergic interneurons that suppress stress-related HPA axis activity; (4) Modulates serotonin and dopamine signaling in social reward circuits; (5) Peripherally, stimulates uterine smooth muscle contraction and mammary gland milk ejection; (6) Anti-inflammatory effects through suppression of IL-6 and TNF-alpha; (7) Promotes wound healing via enhanced cell migration and proliferation.
